Medicare explained clearly

We have gathered the essentials of the United States federal health insurance program on a single page, so you can review your options with clear, well-organized information.

What is Medicare?

Medicare is the federal health insurance program of the United States. It is designed primarily for people 65 and older, and it also covers certain younger people who qualify due to a disability or other eligible medical conditions. The program is organized into different parts, and each one covers a type of service.

Who does it apply to and who is eligible?

In general terms, Medicare applies to:

  • People 65 and older who meet the established residency and contribution requirements.
  • People under 65 who qualify due to a disability under federal criteria.
  • People with certain eligible medical conditions, as defined by the program.

Each person’s eligibility is determined by the rules of the federal program. At Agrillendo Insurance we review your case with you and guide you on the steps to follow.

The parts of Medicare

Part A

Hospital coverage

Mainly covers inpatient hospital stays, care in skilled nursing facilities, hospice care and some home health services, subject to program rules.

Part B

Medical services

Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, medical supplies and other medically necessary services, subject to program rules.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

These are plans offered by Medicare-approved private companies that bundle Part A and Part B coverage, and often include drug coverage and additional benefits.

Part D

Prescription drugs

This is prescription drug coverage, offered through Medicare-approved private plans. The drugs included and their costs vary by plan.

Initial Enrollment Period

The Initial Enrollment Period generally lasts 7 months: the 3 months before the month you turn 65, your birthday month and the 3 months that follow. Knowing these dates ahead of time lets you compare options without rushing.

Guidance before you turn 65

We recommend reviewing your alternatives several months before you turn 65. That way you can calmly analyze which parts or plans fit your medical and financial situation, check whether your current coverage is still appropriate and organize the necessary documentation.

Why it pays to review your options and deadlines

Coverage, provider networks and costs can change from year to year and from plan to plan. Reviewing your options periodically helps you confirm that your plan is still the right one. In addition, in certain cases, enrolling outside the applicable period may result in late enrollment charges; knowing the deadlines that apply to your situation helps reduce that risk.
